If the last few weeks left you stressed out over your first Making Tax Digital submission, you’re in good company. August was the first real test of MTD for Income Tax for a lot of sole traders and landlords, and for plenty of people, it didn’t go well. Around 49.9% of eligible taxpayers missed the first submission deadline, and the reasons were pretty much the same: confusing software and unclear instructions for a system that assumes everyone has got the time to learn.
If deadline day left you feeling stressed and frustrated, you are not alone. Many people who do not have an expert accountant have had the same experience.
What Went Wrong with MTD Submissions in August?
So, what happened? Around one-third of eligible taxpayers had not signed up, and the answer is: doing it alone can be a lot harder than most people expected.
We’ve heard the same handful of complaints over and over. Software that stops working mid-submission, and the “digital links” rule confusing people without any warning. If you spent your deadline day staring at a frozen screen wondering whether your return had actually gone through, you hadn’t done anything wrong.
How Did Our Clients Skip the MTD Stress?
While all of that was happening, our clients had a completely normal day.
Their only job was to update their bank entries, exactly as we’d trained them to do. No spreadsheets, no software rabbit holes, and no last-minute panic.
Behind the scenes, we took care of everything else. We kept the digital links compliant, reviewed and prepared the draft MTD returns, and submitted everything to HMRC before the deadline.
HMRC begins automatically signing up eligible taxpayers from September.
Here’s what you need to know if August didn’t go your way. HMRC starts automatically enrolling, from September 2026, people who are required to use Making Tax Digital for Income Tax but have not already signed up for the 2026/27 tax year. This will happen in stages. If you’re still working with the same setup that let you down last time, then you’re probably heading for another round of the same stress.
